I've read that the new lyrics are more personal and more emotionally meaningful to him than what he was doing before. Before he didn't have the confidence to put it all out like he does now. I think this has always been in him, it's just now coming out.

yesss, i personally love his lyrics, it just seems as if he's such an unhappy person, but like he says, there is poetry in despair, which is pretty evident just by perusing some of the pages of blather. i wish he'd let me love him, though! we could be intimates! tee hee
