Teachers see different students form the same cliques year after year. We're always free to break the mold, but we don't always. What happened in that prison is just what we should have expected; not because the guards were evil or sadistic, but because they are human. They were in circumstances that nurture the kind of behavior those photographs document. It's what happens in prisons if steps aren't taken to prevent it. ..."

I think that's what keeps you humble and shadow fed towards the light. Knowing that at any moment you could abandon everything like Jacob and shirk off the mantle, the cloak of holiness, propriety, the righteousness we so proudly wear. It's just that fragile. We can become the abuser, the monster, the cruel, the vain, the usurper, the selfish, the despotic in an instant if we don't keep our souls close to the light, fed on it..that..the knowledge of that propensity keeps us humble...
