stork daddy there is this toy, where a ball is housed in a plastic circle, so that the cat can hit it and watch it roll around the circle, but never really get it out of the circle. i imagine a cat could do that for hours, always falling for the quick flash of the ball, never stopping when the bid fails to do anything but bat the ball in a more dizzying spin. and yet i'd never mock a cat for that. they are blind perhaps in that they can't see past that four or five second range, can't see past that moment of instinct. but just like they're blind in that range, so too are we often in the range of days or weeks or months. we often can't tell that our batting is just as futile, or that we're sending ourselves in circles. in an hour spent in predatory blindness people have often thrown away dreams they have spent years validating. 040218

cheekys_mom i bought one of those identical toys for my cat. She wouldn't play with it all. She was smart enough to figure out that if she couldn't get the ball, it wasn't worth trying. 040220
