ever dumbening this morning i woke up with a craving for a savory start to my day, rather than a pastry or some cereal. and instead of the tasty but sometimes tired bacon/egg/pancake standard, i was longing for more of the breakfasts of the world concept.

many cultures outside of the u.s. have wonderful street foods. in zhongguo_beijing there was always something tasty to be had streetside: morning, noon, and night (and even snack time in between).

endless variations of noodles in broth, yang_rou_chuan'r, roasted sweet potatoes, candy-coated haw and mandarin orange slices, and the thing my nostalgia_stomach was cawing for: jian bing.

so i go searching the web, mostly just to reminisce, to dream. but a few blogs, pictures, and videos of actual jian bing making has me scrambling into the kitchen to take a crack at my first jian bing in almost ten years.

it wasn't perfect, partly from imperfect ingredients, partly from untried methods, but it was a pretty good approximation.

i remember doing a search a few years ago for jian bing, but came up with little. but now, with so many people connected, with so many experieces, with so many stories, you can always stumble across someone who can relate. you might also learn something new. and maybe, just maybe, you can fry up a delicious approximation of a long lost love.
