black cat music

stephanie called me yesterday and i walked to her house. there were a lot of students freshly moving into their dorms, parents sweaty and smiling, proud of their children, rejoicing to have them out of the house, moving carts of suitcases and personal computers.

i got lost on the way, went to the end of the street, turned around and walked on the other side of the street til i found her building. after that i knew it was a snap. i just walked in without any loud introduction. she was putting up posters.

later her friend laura came, the one who reminded me of a perks of being a wallflower miniature version of daxle. we walked around and found their little friends. we walked past a boy named tim's room. i know his name is tim because i went into his room because "Radio" was playing really loud. he said hes seen them 9 times.

later we walked and found their friend jason. he had fascinating interests but i'm not a jason fan. we all went downtown and stephanie and laura ate cheap subs and i milled around until i approached the insecure girl at the marcos grilled cheese sandwich stand and requested one. it wasn't very good, not very melty and delicious, tho she said it would be.

"If you were walking downtown and saw a grilled cheese sandwich stand, would you buy one?"

laughs, "Of course!"

"If you were to make yourself a grilled cheese sandwich, would you make it melty and delicious?"

"Yes!"

"then thats how i want mine!"

but it wasnt.

and it was expensive.

we went back to stephanies room and i started watching blow.

then i went to gabes because black cat music was going to be playing.

i knew one song by them but i decided it would probably be fun..

there were already a lot of people and they were all there to see their friends bands who were opening. So i sat alone in the back corner. a girl walked in, she looked around at the large group of people sitting in the tables, talking to each other and did what i did, sat in the back corner, at the opposite end of the bench i was on.

Eventually i talked to her. i asked her if she came here alone, she said she was meeting people but doubted they were coming. i told her i came alone. i asked her if she was going to school here, she said yes, she was from tuscon arizona and her name was cassie. Hello Cassie. she said she came to iowa to be part of the literary community. i asked her what bands she likes, she said anything remotely close to rock.

We talked about writing plays and scripts and writing female characters and how stupid it is when male playwrights only make the female character there to support male characters, instead of having their own opinions.

then north to alaska started. And i don't know if i liked them because everyone was screaming and cheering which made them look like they were enjoying themselves on stage, or if they were really really good, but i'd go see them again specifically to see them. thats how good they were. the next band that played was brian jones. not a fan. after brian jones i found cassie again and sat by her while Driver of the year played. i'd rather Brian Jones kept playing.then cassie left. goodbye cassie.

After the shitty driving band played i stood up front and read the lyrics to the black cat music cd i bought and admired my cute and pretty little black cat music pin that had a cute little black cat on it, with bleeding letters that said black cat music. I stood. the people stood behind me. the band started setting up.

The singer had an old dusty black suit coat on over a sweaty white tshirt. under the tshirt were all kinds of tattoos of neat little burning hearts and skulls and a big black cat and the word revenge was tattooed across his clavicle area region under his neck. judging them on the one song i heard by them, it sounded like they were "bad-asses" but they seemed like really nice guys. they mumbled and drank a lot, but who doesn't like that in a band? the thing i don't like about these shows is that they always start so late so the band you come to see is always last and its always really late. but i pushed on and stayed awake and they began. they were really screamy and mumbly and sometimes played acoustic. it was very pretty and amazing to see live. i stood in the front, i was right there, practically getting sweated on by the singer and bass player, who stuck his cigarette at the top of his bass while playing.

then they played wine in a box and it was beautiful cuz i somewhat knew the words and it was so loud i couldnt even hear myself singing, but thena gain at gabes the vocals are always really quiet and drowned out by the music, so i could barely hear them singing either.

I approved highly of their set, and was grateful they played the one song that i knew, even though i didn't know any of the other songs. When they were done, i didn't wait for the last band to play. they switched with one of their opening bands, i don't know why, but i was glad for that too, it was like they heard my wishes or something. i had been really anxious for them to start cuz i was getting sick of waiting for shitty bands, and i know its rude to walk out before the show is over, but i walked out anyway cuz i was tired and the band i wanted to see was done and i liked it and that was enough for me. on the way out i ripped off the flyer off the door that had a big razor that said in bleeding letters BLACK CAT MUSIC.

and now its on my wall.
