you know the type...the bad ass (or maybe just trying-to-be-bad-ass) that plays the drums or is in a rock 'n' roll band. the kind of guy that you see his wounds on his sleeve and you want to through his shirt in the wash. the potheads, musicians, heartbreakers. i fall for them everytime.

You go for the wrong band guys I think. Those alternative.punk "badasses" really piss me off. They play the same songs over and over again, but change the words. It's bloody rediculous.

EXACTLY. Alot of the music around these days is just repeditive bland shite. There are a few bands that break the mould somewhat. Dr Kavorkian & the Suicide Machine for one, Tea Party is also good. Supergroove's later stuff was pretty good. Fur Patrol are excellent. But hell, what does that matter. All bands are manufactured now. You got Boyzone, 5, Britney (Shitney) Spears, Linkin Park, Def Tones, Limp Biscuit, and damn near everything else on the radio. Manufactured. Not real.

When you're a guy, it's interesting how girls that aren't even remotely interested in you start to notice you're alive when they discover you play a musical instrument, or sing, or write songs, or all three. Hell, you'd think a burning cinder block had smacked 'em right in the head.

What do you need to succeed in the music business? Certainly not talent. A nice body. Maybe a decent voice. No musical ability whatsoever. And presto! You're a fuckin' teen sensation!

i look at music from a few different aspects. for one, im a musician and need talent to be satisfied. jimi hendrix, tom morrello, danny carey, lars ulrich, even santana, all have my respect. even if the music isnt my thing, i'll still give them credit of being good at what they do. also, i look for the music being real. chino from deftones, for example, cant sing on key at all, but he sings with his heart which i love. radiohead is musically simple, but has a message thats real and strong. bands from backstreet boys to limp bizkit are all manufactured, whether it be manufactured hatred or love. its just completely insincere and hollow, filling the holes that good bands create when they cant put out a new album every year. one artist i would love to meet is trent reznor. he intrigues me, and i love his music.

Ah HAH HAH HAH. *sniff*. Bu... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH. Ah ha ha. HehHee. s . HEEHEEHEE. I'm sorry. Just seeing "Lars Urlrich" and "talent" in the same sentence looks real funny. But I hear what you are saying. Thing is though that Def Tones are manufactured as well. Betchya didn't know that one. Although I must admit, they are betther than most manufactured stuff, I still don't like 'em too much though.

To answer your question dB...I sort of explained my musical adventures on the ask_me_stuff page, but I can probably do better here. My first instrument was the piano and, after a few years of gritting my teeth and playing, I could put a few chords together. I took piano lessons off and on for a few years, and applied some of the things I learned to develop a partially individual style of playing. Then I say Eric Clapton playing guitar on TV and thought, "That looks easy. You just play bar chords with your thumb. I'll get me a guitar!" However, I soon learned that Eric had been playing with his fingers, as do most other "proper" guitarists. After trying to learn some basic chord formations, failing and giving up, I decided to radically detune the guitar and play on my lap with my thumb and my fingers. Thus, my own guitar technique was formed - something akin to what a sick gorilla would do with the instrument. I took some of these ideas and adapted them to the bass guitar. Then I bought a drum set. I'm certainly not a virtuoso, but I can drum competently enough. So I'm sort of a one-man band, writing, and recording my own messed-up songs. If only I could get the juices flowing again...

Sounds pretty cool man. I could never get the hang of a guitar. My fingers are too big, added to that a guitar looks a bit like a broken toothpick when I'm holding it. I took up drums by accident. A mate of mine was in the jam room at school on his guitar and asked me to tap away some beats. I bought my first kit two days later. My studio is full of oddball instuments that I try to play from time to time if I'm after a particualer sound. I got an old Kimball piano, couple of drum kits, about 11 guitars that my old band members bought and left there, a cheap bass, odd chimes and other percussive stuff. Most of it I'll never figure out how to play. So you are lucky that you are a generic musician. You can records your own stuff without a full band or session people. You got any MP3's I can check out? I'm all intrigued now.

I don't have any MP3's right now, but I'd be happy to send you a CD of some of my stuff if you're interested. The funny thing about my recordings is that none of them sound the same, because I always learn more about the engineering aspect when it's too late to make a difference on my current project. But I don't have any jacket designs or anything; I just write the track list on the back of the CD insert. If you'd like me to send you a CD, you'd probably be best to go with the next thing I do because it's sure to sound better than my other stuff. It'll probably be better-produced too. Even though I've been making music for a while, I'm still learning as I go.

Man, that would be so cool! I'd send you some of my stuff, only recording is a little ricky because I only just built a computer to record on, only to find some of the bits were faulty. Like the processor is not compatible with the board, and teh soundcard is a cheap thing that doesn't work properly, there is something wrong with the RAM, and other such things. It's a crazy as machine. But when I get it fixed I'll start doing some serious work, and would be happy to send you a CD or something. How much do you want for a copy? You can contact me on the e-mail addy on this message.

what a weird little topic this is. I think it's interesting some of the attitudes towards purveyors of pop-type musical entertainment. Speaking from my (male) perspective, I am much more attracted to musicians of the opposite sex if they are classically trained. String players especially... they are gorgeous a lot of the time and have TASTE. I am typically only attracted to women if I feel like I have something to learn from them. If a girl can stump me in a political debate, i'm hers. Nothing is more unattractive to me than a woman whose bark is bigger than her bite. Pseudo-intellectualism or any claims to be an 'artist' turn me off. As a professional (jazz) musician, it has become obviously to me over the years that only those whose product is lacking refer to themselves as 'artists.' It is the truly great ones that allow their craft to speak for itself and for the chips to fall where they may. P.S. do straight-ahead jazz musicians count as 'band guys?' P.S.S. this doesn't exactly apply to me, but what about concert orchestra musicians? Are they "band guys?"
