amy another book, which i am reading, called the Art of Inquiry, ends like this (there is some hope for the archetypal children):

Both the journeyer and the child symbolize the allure of the unknown and the willingness to be guided down unexpected paths. It is just these qualities that are essential to psychological inquiry and to living a psychological life. Because the archetypal journeyer is an adult, not an infant or child, this figure serves an important purpose. It suggests that one need not abandon childlike curiosity no matter how long or how far the journey. One can be at home while journeying and the journey can become a home in the fullest possible sense of that word. Perhaps the true journeyer finds sanctuary in movement more that stillness, in surrender more than control, in engagement more than isolation, in discovery more than certainty, and in longing more than satiety. If the figure of the journeyer is at the center of psychological life, perhaps our task is simply to be true to Psyche, making a home for her wherever we happen to be.

The authors are emphasizing the spiritofplay, but they end with this metaphor of a journey. I suppose it's debatable whether "play" can be applied to all people. and that journey and home (sanctuary) paradox is likely essential to a child's ability to relax into very productive play. so I believe they think the journeyer and the child are one and the same.
