I live in a duplex. It's an older building, and the walls are the opposite of soundproof; a car passing outside sounds like it's in my bedroom. People walking home from school sound like I'm walking beside them. Because of this, I sometimes hear what the people in the other half of the duplex are doing. Especially in the dining room and the bathroom. I hear everything, whether I want to or not. A few months ago, I heard one of the children asking his mother to help him wipe after having done his business. Then I heard the mother snap at him, mimicking, "Mom, mom, I can't wipe my butt. Mom, mom, I can't wipe my nose." And then: "SHUT UP!" It reminded me of the way my mother would talk to me and my sisters. I wanted to break through the wall and tell her to leave her kid alone. But I was in the bath tub, naked. So much for that.
