"three sheets to the wind" was a huge part of the soundtrack to the awkward demarcation between the end of my teenage years and the beginning of something crawling toward adulthood. as bruised as my friendship was with josh by the time he made me a copy of that album, i'll never forget listening to it for the first time as night bled into morning and i turned twenty watching "the basketball diaries" on tv with the sound turned off. i'll always be grateful to him for introducing me to one of my favourite bands.
i'm not sure if "three sheets" is the best idaho album. "year after year" and "this way out" hit harder. "alas" and "hearts of palm" are more refined. and "the lone gunman" is a record made up of two completely different halves that make more sense stitched together than they have any right to. but if i could only listen to one collection of jeff martin's songs for the rest of my life, i think it might be this one.
i remember hearing "a sound awake" the night i drank myself stupid at changez and watched the person i thought was my greatest ally piss all over everything we'd built together. i remember josh standing on my porch, singing a bit of "catapult" a few days before my dad told him he wasn't welcome in the house anymore. i remember playing "if you dare" at the future shop to test a pair of computer speakers that came with a subwoofer.
i remember everything.
these songs are tattooed on my soul. i've spent the last nineteen years convinced a few of them would make the best makeout music in the world. i haven't put that theory to the test. but time has done nothing to chip away at my conviction. "shame" and "stare at the sky" sit at the top of the list. the detuned four-string electric guitars unspool such uniquely beautiful and off-kilter melodies. dan seta turns controlled feedback into something meditative and gorgeous. and jeff's lyrics always make everything clear without explaining a thing.
