oldephebe dorian pretty cool

i wrote a few ditties in a dorian mode and it's prety neat cause you can go A dorian 7th or flatted seventh or not and still move seamlessly between an a minor and d minor feel and then go back to a gmajor and c major feel. it gives you a lot of flexibility...

my favorite dorian chant

a lot of american folk music is based on modes rather than major/minor keys. i think it's because modes are easier to jam on. jazzers like the modes better too. that's why they had a separate theory class. they always had to be separating themselves. humpf

You said it.

That's why there's the whole fluidity and harmonic excursions into limitless leitmotifs and melodic proto-genesis. You can feel like becoming invested with magicks or something when you sometimes by rote repetition learn most of the possible modes and the "standard" deviations and variations from and thereof and then use that vocabulary to take a big bounding leap off of the edge of the world as it were.
