crOwl if i flew to montreal, i would be the bird who turned back into man once i got there. i've heard so much about this city. its cosmopolitan nature is what i've heard most about. like going to europe. 040403

inconnue montreal
is a spot on the page
on a map it is
a dot in a big atlas
it talks to me
it says "hey
i'm montreal
come visit me,
come see my streets
i've got lots to show you"
and i blink and think
of montreal, somewhere
someday far from here
040404
...
inconnue i guess i've been there before
in some fantastical sorta way

my mother loved montreal,
she's told me many times

such an olde towne

...in my quest to find roots...
i've learned about many of my ancestors who lived there long ago
some very cool stories, to me anyway

one dude, i found out recently,
was actually
.the.first.permanent.inhabitant.of.montreal.
(.of.european.origin.i.mean.)

it was called ville-marie then

some of the pioneer neighbours of this guy turn out to be my ancestors as well

well,...
they are a lot of people's ancestors, not just mine
but i'm glad to learn about them now

i had no idea, i wonder if they did

Q So it went from being Marie's City to King's Mountain. There must have been a change in the political party controlling the city council. Or perhaps Marie and her family and friends moved away? Or were removed to elsewhere by all the King's men? 040404

inconnue There are a few stories behind how Montréal got its name. One story says that it stems from Mont Royal. Another says that King François named it for Archbishop Monreale of Sicily who persuaded the Pope to annul Spanish and Portuguese claims in the New World, thus allowing the French to claim land. The third story claims that one of Cartier's men was from an area of France that was known for its fortresses name Montréal that were elevated on cliffs and the area reminded him of it. The true story may never be known.

epitome of incomprehensibility If you are downtown you can go on the metros and hardly set foot outside, come wintertime... but for me, downtown is a place to go, not to live; I prefer the more expansive northwest, north of the plateau, Parc Ex to Jean Talon. Or even where I live now, in boring Dorval. (I have a perverse attraction to the airport. I think it's pretty.)

Food! There is lots of good food downtown, however! Lola Rosa, close to McGill, is a nice casual Latin-themed vegetarian restaurant.

n o m thanks for the tips! we will see, things are confusing ... up in the air. the amazingly cheap rent is attractive though. if i do move there, i think i actually might like downtown, though i have to check it out more. i currently live in a building in the_west_end in vancouver and love the density and busyness of the neighbourhood. i like the plateau though, / mile_end which is where i think i stayed before when i played there in 2007 (at bar st. laurent 2, and another place i forget). no_reason was there for some of that trip, ah memories!...i ate at au vivres., i have only spent that one week there, never got back. well would love to visit and play there again if i don't move there. 130917

e_o_i the silly You should come here! Or at least visit!

...I just read over my last post and now I'm wondering: if I had a perverse attraction to the subway, would that make me metrosexual?

e_o_i Comedian couple Jess Salomon and Eman El-Husseini met in this city - they were talking about it on the radio, something like:

"Jess started talking about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict..."

"Which is how we flirt..."

They're doing a set of shows together where before they mostly did stand-up separately.

e_o_i Look when I wrote that last one. The pandemic must have put their comedy tour on hiatus.

...

Now it's less pandemic-y, but we're collectively under the weather.

I mean, it's not weird for Montreal to have cold winters and hot summers - that's kind of its thing - but global warming is driving the temperature up up up uncomfortably.
