i've wanted to see this movie for thirteen years now, in part because of that last comment. as someone who's always been fascinated by unsettling dreams, there's something appealing about the idea of watching a nightmare i can wake up from anytime i feel like it. i've had it on dvd all this time. i just haven't felt like i'm in the right headspace to take it in. whatever that is. i should probably watch it while i still own a functioning dvd player.

Hello at this popping up in my late-night-finally-finished-that-language-acquisition-assignment browsing! I don't know if there are many films I absolutely hate, but I was frustrated with Me Before You because it made it seem like physically disabled people have nothing to live for. There's a way to be sympathetic to, say, medically assisted dying without doing that. Also, lots of romance clichés.

maybe these aren't "films i think other people probably shouldn't watch" as much as they're things i wouldn't want to see again myself, but "irreversible" and "aurore" are two i don't think i could sit through a second time. it's not because they're bad movies. it's because of what happens in them. as it turns out, they're both french films. funny, that.

"going berserk". i thought it was the funniest thing i'd ever seen when i was ten years old. to say it doesn't hold up would be like saying it gets a little dark at night. it's almost impressive how unfunny it is, given the amount of talent involved. even john candy can't save this sinking ship.

Synechdoche is actually my #1 most hated movie ever. But I know people who've really appreciated it and who have really been impressed with it and it's opened up their mind and sense of wanderlust and broadened their horizons and all that pseudo_intellectual drivel you'd find seeping through any literature department on any university campus. And I can't say they're wrong for that. Nor can I say that it carries no value. Much like Kaufman's other films that I hate, Adaptation and Being_John_Malkovich, or even the Kaufman films that I enjoyed, Eternal Sunshine and I'm_Thinking_of_Ending_Things. If it means something to you, then it means something. I could go on all day about divisive films that I don't like, critically acclaimed films that I don't like, and yet it's difficult for me to take the stance that they're things you should not see. Because art has no intrinsic value, it's not entirely subjective either, it's all reflected in the consciousness and imagination of the audience. It's interpretive. It's a matter of taste. And to see a film is an experience, which can be informed situationally, such as when and where and with whom you're viewing the film. So I can't pre-designate its value because I can't prescribe anyone else's experience in the same sense that I can't explain anyone else's perspective. Different strokes of tea for different cups of folk. And so I have to preserve some kind of neutrality and come to the conclusion that everyone has to draw their own conclusions when it comes to seeing films. ...but then there's The_Bank_Job. It's not just another Jason_Statham b list cash grab. (I say this with the qualification that I've not seen many of his films after the Guy_Ritchie ones but I have to assume that he has not done worse than this). It is truly a pathetic garbage dump of a film. It does not check any boxes. Does not scratch any itch, not intellectually not emotionally not even as braindead entertainment. It could not possibly mean anything to anyone. And you should not see it.
