You can save the tree. Gather together ten or so of your friends, go together to the place where the tree from the 1500's stands, bring along some clothes, blankets, water, food, sleeping bags and maybe even tents, camp around the tree so "the man," ever gluttonous for the big bucks that come from unnecessary widening of roads, cannot get close enough to touch the tree. Plan to be at the place a couple days. When TV news finds out what you're doing and lets the world know of the outrage "the man" wants to pull off, hordes of people will come out to support you, and the tree will be saved. Most people respect the lives of ancient trees more than they want wider roads. "The man" is a wimp when confronted with organized people power. It's disorganized people, who he knows have no power, that he disdains. He will drive away at breakneck speed with his big machines and never threaten the tree again after the people face him down with shouts of "Hell no, this tree's not gonna' go. It needs this space, and doesn't need to see your greedy face." Yes, you can save the tree.
