he just takes up way too much. he's big and tall and so loud. he can interrupt others but it's impossible to interrupt him. he'll do anything to get out what he has to say, even if it means not really listening to the person he's responding to. he's not a bad person. and this is done partly out of loneliness. but i can't fit in the small amount of space that's left over.

big white men should really be extra aware of the amount of space they take up.

he left her alone in their house for the first time in years, ran to a nearby bakery for breakfast. “do you want to come with me?” she fretted. “if i go, i’m going to want a donut and i don’t need one.” “well, you can sit in the car.” he waited in the foyer wearing his sneakers and his wool cap for her to decide. “why don’t you just go on without me?” it was like a revelation those words, that she could opt to stay behind. “i’ll take a coffee, if you don’t mind.” the bakery was blocks from their street, he’d only be gone five minutes. surely, he could manage five minutes without her, couldn't he? after he drove away, she swept the porch of discarded nut casings left behind from squirrels and birds on an unseasonably warm day. it was strange to see the driveway empty, to not be shadowed by him. she stopped and inhaled the rain-soaked morning deeply and a space inside her lungs expanded, as though rubber bands once cinched tight around each respirating cone had snapped, allowing her to breathe in what life could be.

the ideal arrangement: we live in a duplex. each side has a backdoor with a doggie door so louie can come and go as he pleases.

she grew up in a family of loud, outgoing people who always talked over each other and competed to get words in. when she found herself in groups of people that wanted to know about her and allowed her more space, she didn't know what to do with it since everything she had was buried deep. maybe quiet people are quiet because they were never given the space to find their voices.
