even in a desert whose edges show slight traces of green among the occasional gatherings of ice-crystals, i dream of glaciers and wind and the imaginary melody of falling snow. primal, carnal rhythms of pagan rituals of wine and flesh and fire set in stark contrast to a cold white expanse of some faraway woodland or the sterile, pale blue of the desert as the setting moon gives way to the coming dawn. i am fire in ice

Dead Can Dance "Within the realm of a dying sun" memories of the drive back down from Flagstaff to Sedona on an early afternoon in March as fresh snow began to fall on a quiet and rather narrow, tree-lined stretch of the highway

if i remember correctly, part of the reason i picked up that bjork is because you recommended it. it is sunny here which means its cold funny how in deep winter as much as i long for sunshine i dread it frozen frozen the drip of melting icicles is my favorite winter music melting meaning it might just be warm enough outside not to freeze your balls off waiting for the bus

to be frail is to begin to be free...on repeat on my i-pod at the moment... its almost indescribable, actually, how much i love this song.(among others of course) thanks_raze for being the musical genius that you are and for sharing yourself with us.

dead_can_dance the entire "Within the Realm of a Dying Sun" album... i first heard it driving up to Flagstaff as snow began to fall just past Sedona. something about the tone of the music, the choices and voices of the instruments therein seemed to mesh so perfectly with the overcast afternoon as the high desert gave way to the forest and the evergreens and the last of the red clay soil were paved over with white

to paraphrase ralph wiggum, "me, musical genius? that's un-possible!" for me, "alas" by idaho will always be the perfect winter album. something about it always conjures up images of snow, even in the summertime. and "run but you ran" is the only time in my life i've ever heard a song by someone else that felt like it was speaking directly to me. hearing it for the first time was like a punch in the stomach, with flowers hidden between the knuckles. "all of your friends were nuts you miss being with them sometimes but now it's time to help someone else with something that you've learned a lot somehow you will recover from all of this sick society's fun a lonely trip it's gonna be a very mysterious way to be free nothing will seem right outside until it's right inside"

i think pretty much any good jazz album will always feel like christmas or at least winter music to me. that's probably due in no small part to the_red_tie_club, short_lived as it was.

i've been saving "turn_on_the_bright_lights" for just this occasion. it's been years since i've listened to it. "patience (after sebald)" by the caretaker probably belongs on the list too, even if the paper it's written on only exists inside of me.
