in the summer, i lie awake in my bed with the windows down listening to the thunder as i breathe. taking one breath at a time, and find myself slowly drift out of conciousness. i think that rainstorms are beautiful, but i never thought they were violent.

i hear it in the distance and it seems to roll. not an angry sound, but a lazy, loping one. like the hair of god being sheered off and falling at a stranger's feet.

this morning. not thunder_like_a_gunshot, but loud enough, and such a distended sound. no switching off again after that.

i don't miss the house rattling variety of this. even though thunder and lightening have really picked up around here in the past year it's nowhere near as big and dramatic as the midwestern kind i grew up with...yet.

spookily prescient that this would come back up on the "today" column, because last night ... good god. it must have gone on for seven or eight hours. there was rumblin' aplenty.

in oregon, in the valley, a clap or two of thunder is an Event. in the morning, californians oregonians and a few idahoans: it thundered last night! did you hear the thunder? it was crazy! etc. i really disliked the endless gray curtain of mist from november to april, when it's either raining, it just did, or it's going to. i love the thunderstorms of the south. they are reliable. always when i go home there is a day when it becomes very dark very early very quickly and the air smells a bit metallic the rain pelts the windows, loud like rocks on tin and we can't heard each other (belle, the dog we had when i was growing up, didn't mind storms. she was half-deaf but i don't know if that has anything to do with it. she also had one brown and one blue eye. rosie doesn't notice them now that she's 15 but she never did anyway. but louie hates storms, shivers and hides.) and the lightning crackles it makes a sound like snapping a stick in half the good kind anyway, not that softer slower heat lightning, almost like it's lazy, maybe an hour of lightning like god was putting on a show for us. we watched from our motel room in kansas city where we'd driven in at midnight, drank some beer, had sex, played rummy, ate chips and watched lightning, and passed out i guess i'm talking more about lightning than thunder now

it's a pretty jarring sensation when you think the snow has stamped out whatever sound the day had left to make, and the sky lets you know it has other ideas.
