raze "here," liam said. "some guy made this portable theremin. you like weird stuff. maybe you can get some use out of it. all it needs is batteries."

it was black. it looked like the walkman i was always listening to when i was a kid. i fed it with energizer or duracell or whatever i had lying around the house. i turned it on and started making invisible shadow puppets above the antenna.

it didn't work.

nr this sparked such a rollercoaster of emotion in me. it's very sad it didn't work. 220703

nr it's on my bucket list to try one of these. and also to get a cat who will try one as well. 220703

raze have i been remembering it wrong all these years?

i dug the theremin out of a box in the basement. it doesn't run on batteries. there's a power supply attached to the sidea terminal umbilical cord snaking out of the box's dark skin, daring neutral and hot holes to feed it what it needs. four rubber feet keep it from sliding on a smooth surface.

there's no loop antenna. only an abbreviated upright receiver. a knob on the front controls the base pitch of the signal before it's manipulated by movement. a female port connects a quarter-inch patch cord to an external amplifier.

it works after all.
