kerry i miss the trees, desperately. i miss the abundance of fresh delicious produce, the bats, and the clematis and bright roses that surrounded the house in spring and summer. i miss the library. i miss the filthy river and the short drive to the coast, with its boulders and beaches covered with stones.

but if i went back i'd just want to leave again. two major highways in the whole state made it incredibly isolating. hardly anyone came out to visit. there was one decent used bookstore, and for six months out of the year it was gray and drizzly. the rain was too light for an umbrella but too heavy to go without a parka. there was a kind of machismo about umbrellas. at least on the east coast there's sunshine in winter.
