It was by a couple of archeologists about the rise and fall of the mayan civilization. Their culture, and Calandar. The Mayans used a base twenty system of numbering (counting on both fingers and toes ) and had a belief that time was sacred and cyclical. They belived that the world was recreated every time the long count rolled over a period of over 3100 years or so. I don't remember the exact length and I have long ago lost the book I got this from, but anyone interested should look up Mayan calander refferences. The odd thing was that they started counting long before there is any evidence of human activity in central america, and continues till early in the twenty-first century. I did a little cross checking and the start of the present long count roughly corosponds to the advent of human farming and city building in Mesopotamia. This is thought to be a turning point in our development away from Nomadic Hunting clans toward settled Kingdoms. It leads me to think that the next social evolutionary step will occur in 02012, perhaps machine self awareness, or E T contact. I didn't know about the earlier events of the long count. What I do remember is that in June 2014, the Long count stops. It just ends. I'll have to re-check that one though as it was ages ago, and my memory is fading out alot these days. The only thing I feel that is any justification for anything is compassion. Without compassion you are not a complete humsn. Yes, maybe in the physical form, but the rest is not there. The only intresting parts of humanity would, for me, be emotions. I don't know what is out in the rest of the universe.
