MONTREAL
(Reuters) -
Happy
window
cleaners
provided
a
moment
of
mirth
on
Tuesday
at
a
Canadian
court
hearing
into
whether
an
alleged
Russian
spy
should
be
deported.
At
the
start
of
proceedings
on
whether
a
man
who
calls
himself
Paul
William
Hampel
and
claims
to
be
Canadian
is
in
fact
an
elite
Russian
spy
,
two
cleaners
outside
the
building
began
noisily
scraping
and
washing
the
courtroom
windows
.
Inside
the
court
,
where
several
security
officers
stood
impassively
and
lawyers
huddled
over
their
case
documents, Federal
Court
Justice
Pierre Blais struggled
to
hear
testimony
over
the
rattle
and
bang
of
the
windows
.
Barely
hiding
his
exasperation, Blais
asked
a
court
clerk
to
step
outside
to
resolve
the
issue
.
The
clerk
returned
,
but
the
cleaners
continued
their
work
in
the
freezing
temperatures
and
brisk
winds
,
this
time
singing
happily
as
their
tools clattered
on
the
glass
.
"
It's
supposed
to
last
five
minutes
,"
the
judge
told
the
court
,
peering
over
his
glasses
. "
I
hope
my
patience
will
last
that
long
."
It
did
.
The
cleaners
moved
on
,
and
the
courtroom
testimony
resumed."
