prince of darkness. check out the synopsis from barnes+noble: "Proving that you can never guess what you'll find when you clean out the basement, a man of the cloth discovers that ultimate evil has made a hiding place in his cellar in this tale of terror. Father Loomis (Donald Pleasance) is a priest at a small Catholic church in L.A. who discovers a strange object in his basement -- a canister filled with a swirling and volatile green substance. With the help of Professor Birack (Victor Wong), Loomis discovers the startling truth about his find -- it seems that Satan, who is actually an alien life form, had a son, and the essence of the devil's spawn is trapped inside the canister. The evil spirit has been guarded by a group calling themselves "The Brotherhood of Sleep," but the spirit has the ability to free itself whenever it decides the time is right...and it seems that time is just around the corner. Prince of Darkness was directed by horror master John Carpenter; he also wrote the screenplay under the pseudonym Martin Quatermass."

"a touch of evil" has gotta be up there. some people would kill me for saying this, but that might be orson welles' real masterpiece. what a great, insane, pulp-choked chunk of film noir. charlton heston plays a mexican narcotics officer. that's all you need to know.

good call on the original "rollerball", by the way. i realize i'm saying this a decade after the conversation ended, but still. that film has such a unique atmosphere to it. james caan's performance has been criticized in some quarters, but i think he made the right choice in keeping the scenery out of his mouth. the whole movie feels like it's in a trance, and all the "dated" elements only add to the appeal.

you know what ... i'm gonna put m. night shamalamalamalan's "the happening" here too. it was absolutely savaged in the press, and reviews that don't rip it to shreds are hard to come by, but i think the people who were looking for another "sixth sense" missed the point. i mean, yeah, it's tough to buy marky mark as a high school science teacher. but if you're in the right frame of mind, it's a solid little monster movie where the monsters can't be seen, a big step up from the likes of "lady in the water" and "the village", and i've always had a thing for ominous apocalypses and end-of-the-world scenarios. it's no "children of men", but it's not trying to be. it's just a good "turn off your brain and enjoy" popcorn flick.
