Peaceniks CALM DOWN! Basic evolutionary theory, psych 101, anthropology, classical Greek literature, and games theory all make it perfectly clear.... PEACE IS IMPOSSIBLE! Humanity functions on imbalance just like the universe. Not to say that peace shouldn't be sought after but don't demand it and don't expect it in everything. Peace is defined as the interval between wars.

you use idealism instead of rationalism. History teaches both that nobody learns from history and that NOTHING changes, it just varies form. Like the child who shuts his eyes during hide and seek so are you being about human nature... no, nature itself.

Regarding the exchange between .nom and Ft Lot: Ft Lot's attitude toward peace is suited to the real world. The belief that peace is impossible is not a cynical one; it is a functional one. Conflict is natural. Therefore war is natural. We should measure peace not in terms of conflict, but in terms of nonviolence. In an advanced state mankind should have outgrown violent coercion. But here’s a question: What if the majority rules in favor of idiocy, bigotry, racism, sexism, religious fanaticism and genocide? Then what? Do just wait for the next election? I firmly believe that justice needs to be defended – violently if necessary.

I'm sorry but moral relativism is out of date. Belief that there is no such like as right or wrong is ridiculous. If nothing is right and nothing is wrong then EVERYTHING is right and EVERYTHING is wrong. “I don’t like cats. I’ve decided to kill every cat.” “But you can’t do that!” “Why not?” “Because it’s wrong!” “Says who? You? Who are you to tell me right from wrong!” This type of thinking leads to anarchy, in which case I should rejoice because all of you with your heads jammed into the ostrich hole will be the first dispatched. Natural selection. It puzzles me to no end wondering how people can be this thick. The Greeks called it Eris, discord and strife. The Greeks understood that without some degree of disorder life was impossible. Every aspect of the universe functions on imbalance. I challenge someone to find any system in the universe functioning with complete balance and full harmony… you will not. Ponder for a moment the amount of disorder you experience everyday. Music operates on harmony, melody and dissonance. Without dissonance in music it has little spark, creates little interest and leaves us with nothing memorable. Like writing, or stories in general, without conflict it serves nothing to the reader. When was the last time you read something interesting without some sort of problem needing to be solved? Aside from creative projects of the human mind, nature itself works on organized chaos. Our bodies work hard everyday to beat back the elements and keep us working toward… whatever it is we’re heading for. Meanwhile, the elements themselves are fighting for equilibrium. The imbalance in the air pressure brings air into lower pressured areas upon which rides the weather and creates wind. During a lightening storm you can hear thunder, which is caused by the swift vaporizing of the atmosphere and the quick return of the air around it. Outside of the weather we can always point to the earth herself in that the crust itself is shifting due to INTERNAL DISHARMONY (you think we’re responsible for that?). The list can go on forever. The Sun consumes itself in a battle to stop gravity from imploding it. Capitalism runs off exploitation. As do governments as a matter of fact. Try and find something! Anyway… I’m not saying we as a species shouldn’t strive for peace but I am saying that expecting complete peace and harmony across all aspects of humanity is naive. What we should strive for is non-oppressive, non-torturous solutions to mankind’s struggles and stop trying to oppress those emotions that have made us strong. Human troubles should be dealt with like cancer… quickly, violently and resulting in the complete removal of the problem area.
