very web-orientated, with many, many extensions; a few of the things easily possible in PHP: html creation image(jpg, gif, png) creation flash(mng/shockwave) creation pdf creation several DB access methods; postgresQL, MSSQL, mySQL, Oracle, ODBC more obscure ones xml functions Cybercash other online payment system integrated hardcore encryption eg IDEA, 3DES, blowfish others email functions for IMAP, pop3, etc good regex engine (supports perl-compatible regex, and POSIX) zip compression/decompression (and more) also very easy to learn use, supported on many server/OS combinations, and has possibly the best developer site in the world (php.net) drawbacks: comparitively slow when doing a lot of processing.. erm... that's really all I can think of.. :-)

one instant comparison is that in PHP, you don't need to terminate the headers first, it already knows. (but you can modify headers if you need to) PHP's just clever. you run freebeasty right? I'm sure there's a distro for that. php.net's tutorial will get you rocking in no time ;-)
