this is what my calendar says. two words for today. i hope the calendar isn't a liar. most of the snow has gone. just a few little pockets of it remain, white bits of tissue pressed to the ground in the places where it must have cut itself shaving. all those piles of it melted at a slow enough pace that no one drowned in the street. there were no magical displays of spontaneous synchronized swimming at four-way stops. no cars living new lives as improvised boats. for the moment, i choose to believe. spring begins today.

spring begins not with snow but with ice falling from the sky. i prefer snow.

It's sunny. I like the sun. What a banal statement that was. Here, there's still snow on the ground, but I saw two robins yesterday. The first looked at me as if to say what_the_fuck_am_I_doing_here? Robins always look as if they're saying the word "fuck" or the word "quizzical" or some birdlike combination of the two.

the ferns are unfurling. little mushrooms fruiting towards the sun from mossy tree trunks. baby goats and sheep bounce in the fields. the sun is warm again.

And today for the first time this year I saw Canada geese. Two groups, one in your standard v-shape and the other in more of a check mark.

Snowing here today too. Well, it snowed on April 15 last year. I have a record of it (i.e. I wrote it down).

it hasn't grown up to be itself yet, and if it takes too much longer summer might break its jaw with one solid knockout punch the second it comes out of its corner to answer the bell. seasons don't seem to know what they want to be around here anymore, or when.

theory: the amount of clothing someone wears while running in early spring is inversely related to the amount of time they spent doing outdoor activities during the winter.

A good theory, I think. I really really dislike the cold... I am a desert_rat I love the sub and living in an oven. Now I love in a damp ch illy foggy place where the weather changes often. I'm not used to real seasons... spring means pollen, allergies and rain now. Also birds and enough sunshine to make me hungry for summer and the desert. How does anyone live where it snows? Hard to imagine even though I grew up ice_fishing and building snow_huts in minnesota during the winter breaks...

I'm a little bit the opposite. I mean, I don't like really hot weather. It makes me feel drowsy and lethargic. I'm not a fan of extreme cold either. (I like to pretend winter is my favourite, just to be contrary, but it isn't strictly true.) I love being outside in spring and fall, especially when it's sunny. Here, the snow is just melting, and the tips of chives are poking through the ground even before the crocuses. I'm looking forward to fresh chives with salad. If it doesn't snow again, I'll probably take my bike out this week.

What do you know - I wrote here several times before and here I thought it was my first time. Well, it isn't Virgin Spring, then. It's a tradition. The Rite of Spring. It's Some Work of Art with the Word Spring in the Title.
