by the way, string quartet no. 8 by shostakovich is one of my favorite classical pieces ever. sometimes, ugly is the new and most best beautiful.

for some reason i felt like taking a break from the manual typewriter kick i was on, and getting back to the even more archaic handwritten medium. i don't know why, but i've always been a sucker for black sharpies, even if they make me write larger letters than i already do and limit how much i can fit on a page. i'll definitely check out shostakovich...my friend anna has mentioned his greatness to me as well. and i'd love to hear your new song whenever you have it recorded. or, you know, you could come out here and i'll record it for you. 'cause my piano likes it when other people play it, and windsor is an exciting tourist town. people come from far and wide just to breathe in the pollution and absorb the wholesome strip club-soaked downtown experience...

i prefer the chamber music cause the kgb wasn't on shostakovich's ass about it, so i feel it is more him. but the symphonies are still amazing despite the censorship. i recommend the emerson string quartet recording of string quartet no. 8. it is the best i've heard and i've listened to quite a few. i think that piece is at the top of my list of best classical piece of all time. i have never had such satisfaction from learning something as the semester i got to play it in chamber music class. shostakovich said he cried the equivalent of several pint glasses of tears while he was writing it. i could gush forever about it. i don't listen to much classical music when i'm not playing it, but no. 8 is great. i would love to come to windsor to record. but unfortunately, time and money are always an issue *sigh*

i guess it's in some of the lyrics, like "sad excuse for a muse"...not especially nice stuff, true as it may be. and the way a few of the songs degenerate into dissonance. i'm glad it isn't off-putting, though. maybe it's more about what i was feeling at the time, and that's where the ugly comes from.

maybe i appreciate dissonance more than most. both the piano songs i've written have a good dose. i rather like the angsty tone of some of those lyrics. it hits a button with me, the just_friends button that i have been forced to push myself one too many times.

my heart is mushy listening to "at least a dog lets you know where you stand." i am really digging the darker side of johnny_west - hoping the sublimation has helped you wiggle some of the hard times out.. in the words of the Stones - got to scrape that shit right off your shoes..
