Hawking places £70 bet on
"God particle" (Higgs boson)
Stephen_Hawking has put money on the "God particle" that is crucial to standard theories of physics not existing.
The author of A Brief History of Time, who is Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University, has placed the bet with an American physicist.
Professor Gordon Kane of the University of Michigan is convinced that
"the Higgs boson is real and will soon be discovered."
But Hawking bet him $100 (about £70) that he is wrong,

THE GOD PARTICLE
Among the particles they hope will be scattered in the colossal explosions will be the sought-after Higgs boson, the so-called God particle, which according to the Standard Model of particle physics is responsible for generating mass.
Other questions the LHC may help answer include the nature of "dark_matter," which scientists say makes up some 95 percent of the universe but which has not yet been detected.
