on he literary note, i guess i'm more partial to "breasts" or maybe eve "bosoms" "teats" seems too much like a purely biological term (and too animal at that) and "tits" does just seem too vulgar...but even that, in some context wouldn't necessarily be wrong

Not that I mind teats for "usage," other than literary usage, provided it is consenually and tenderly, very tenderly. This includes my own, by the way. Never would I consider, or consider referring in public or even intimate private to, a teat as a tit. As far as I've ever been concerned, no teat I've ever been treated to consider in its fleshy fulness has been a tit, regardless of its size or supposed lack thereof.
