i don't know what my favourite werner_herzog film is. they're as different from one another as they are from everyone else's cinematic sweat stains and rorschach tests. he and klaus kinski were made for each other. that much i'm sure of. "fitzcarraldo", "aguirre", and "woyzeck" are almost intense enough to burn a hole through the screen. "even dwarfs started small" resembles nothing else you're ever likely to see. production wrapped with an unfilmed leap into a cactus patch by the director. it was meant as a sympathetic gesture. for "heart of glass", he hypnotized most of his cast just to see what would happen. his documentaries, from "grizzly_man", to "fata morgana", to "the land of silence and darkness", cast a spell all their own. but there's something about bruno s. that speaks to me in a place where words break down and their detritus can't be trusted. i'm reminded of something ray carney said about john cassavetes: as an actor, he might have only been capable of playing himself, but he had a very interesting self to play. i think the same was true of bruno. when you watch him feel his way through a scene, you aren't witnessing a performance. you're staring into his unvarnished soul. and the soul stares back. "the enigma of kaspar hauser". maybe that's the one i love best. because it's about nothing less than what it means to be human.

There are lists. In my life. Things to watch. Things to listen to. Things to do. Things to never do again...I've only actually seen Fitzcarraldo and Burden_of_Dreams, from what I can remember. Pretty sure I saw nosferatu. I_can't_remember. And definitely the aforementioned mini doc werner_herzog_eats_his_shoe, which was just crossed_off_the_list. But suffice it to say he's left more than a delible impression on me in only a few glances. (The conpletely awesome) local library has a movie streaming website which has a lot of Herzog. Most of the things mentioned by raze in fact. Thank you. They've found their way onto a list. It's a matter of when not if they're seen. And today'll be a good day to get on those movie lists. It's a nice enough morning but weather will get nastier throughout the day. Stay home and watch movies? Twist my arm why don't ya. Because god knows there are things_to_do and god knows there are lists. There are more lists than liszt could list between the cyst in which I exist and the abyss. Excuse me.

Conpletely is actually kind of nice as typos go. Con is a suffix with a lot of different interpretations attached, even just in English but certainly when expanded. Could make for something clever if one was determined enough.

Also werner_herzog_eats_his_shoe was not among the aforementioned. That was the other blathe. Gets easy to conflate. I should probably eat something. Anyway.

I'd forgotten Woyzeck was made by Herzog! I saw the movie, or at least part of it, in my immer_immersion German class last summer. Seems to me the main difference from the play is that Buchner satirized society with the side characters, but played the main character more or less straight. In the play he's more of a straight-up tragic figure. But Herzog plays up the ridiculous in Woyzeck's existential crisis and over-the-top revenge. ...There's some humour in the Buchner play too, from the selfish officer who blathers on about morality to the doctor who uses Woyzeck for dangerous nutrition experiments and says things like, "Oh wow, another marvelous symptom! Excellent, keep it up!" But the film also brings out the rigid monotony of Woyzeck's army job. Like in the opening scene, classical music overlaying the training sequence, actor grimacing mightily...I only have vague memories, but I remember thinking Herzog's weirdness served the story well.
