In the last few years, i have purposely tried to broaden my food horizons by trying out new fruits/veggies/meals just for the fun of it. I bought 2 avocados last summer, just a few days before my aunt died (very suddenly and unexpectedly). Like most of my family, i couldn't bring myself to eat much at the time, so I put them away in the fridge to try and preserve them a little longer (bad idea?? o.O ). When i finally got to them a few days later, i peeled away some of the skin and tried a little sliver--it was like eating a chunk of butter! Definitely not my thing. Now, i thought it might've been because it had gone bad, but not long ago my uncle Jack said the exact same thing about them as well. He'd stumbled on to the avocado in an interesting way... apparently he'd once tried some mango and didn't realize/remember it was called "mango". So when he saw the avocado, he thought he had bought the right thing because of the shape/similar colour.

one of my last roommates was mexican. i went over to her parents' house a couple of years ago for thanksgiving. there was all the stuff i was used to and then the beans and rice and tortillas and salsa and guacamole. after i ate two plates of food her dad looked at me and asked me if i wanted some guacamole. it was the only english i heard him speak the entire time i was there. and it was the spiciest guacamole i've ever eaten. i swallowed it with out coughing (barely bulging my eyes even) and her dad got a huge smile on his face. i smiled back and then all of a sudden i was part of her family.

there was a place in new york that used to make the guac at the table. if you asked for chips and guacamole, it said on the menu that it was approximately three dollars. what they didn't tell you is that was the price for the pre-made guacamole, and unless you asked for it, they would wheel the cart over, and it quintupled the price.

so i bit the bullet and tried some by way of guacamole (but i bought one of those dip mixes for it, because i have no idea what i'm doing when it comes to avocados.. =") ). I mashed up the avocado, added some lime juice (i didn't have any lemon), and threw in the guacamole dip packet. Still too buttery. Then, inspiration struck! I grabbed the bag of chilli flakes, and also the dehydrated onion flakes, and added small amounts of each. Another taste, and voila! No more butter taste, and it's not half bad! =0)

when it goes just right guacamole should have a creamy, but nonetheless "green" flavor offset by however much chili heat you apply and how many pinches of salt you throw in. -------------------------------------- avocado....spread in several thin slices over a cheeseburger with mushrooms and monterey jack cheese
