if only because in a dream last night i was listening to a strange (and nonexistent) 1978 stones compilation on vinyl, called "good morning america". it featured a slew of obscurities and re-recordings of old songs, and though "dear doctor" was moved down a step or two and lost something in its slicker new incarnation, it reminded me i always got a kick out of that "beggars banquet" tune, due in no small part to mick's outrageous falsetto. 		140920

because "black and blue" doesn't get the respect it deserves in the pantheon of stones albums. sure, "fool to cry" is kind of schlocky (keith found the song so boring, the story goes, that he once fell asleep while performing it live). and "crazy mama" isn't a soul-shaking album-closer on the same level as "soul survivor", "you can't always get what you want", or "moonlight mile". but there's some good stuff there. and billy preston was badass. 		150108

the first stones song that really took my head off. in honour of charlie watts, who died today.

there's a story that mick jagger got drunk on tour a million years ago and called charlie's hotel room in the middle of the night slurring, "where's my drummer?"

charlie got out of bed, shaved, put on a suit and tie, found mick in the lobby, and punched him in the face.

"don't ever call me your drummer again," he said. "you're my fucking singer."

then he went back to bed.

it's probably apocryphal. it's still a great story. the stones just aren't the stones without charlie holding it all together. 		210824
