backup
tender_square she could tell he was upset. "what did your sister mean when she said she wasn’t going to be your 'backup plan'?"

"i have no idea," she was stunned by the question. she knew what he was circling around but wanted to hear him say it. she would not offer anything about what was happening inside her unless she was confronted directly. "what was the context?"

"you don’t remember?" he was incredulous.

"honestly? i don’t."

"when she was mentioned talking to her ex again and you were surprised, she said if you had talked to her you would’ve known," he said. "then she said she wasn’t going to be your 'backup plan.' what did she mean by that?" his suspicion of her bordered on paranoia at times. "is there something i don’t know?"

"no," she managed calmly—her parents were beyond the door. "not at all." she removed her earrings at the dresser as he studied her movements from bed. "i honestly don’t know what she meant by that."

he wouldn’t stop looking at her as he waited for a better answer than what he was being given.

"maybe she was feeling slighted because of those parties i went to with my girlfriend being in town. i told her i’d call her and then i didn’t, and then the longer i waited, the more i wondered what the point of phone was when we’d catch up here." she moved onto the bed and curled into his neck reassuringly. "i think she’s feeling like sloppy seconds."

the tension dispelled from his shoulders. "oh."
