he felt like he had something to prove, or at least like she needed to prove to him that he didn't; he met her eyes expecting battle, but her eyes were all-soft, like in a swamp his eyes stuck in her eyes; nothing moved, everything was still, and there were rainbows in the corners of his vision

And the rainbow stretched for miles and miles as they stared out towards the horizon that seemed unreachable, yet all comforting. They stood there on the grassy hill, damp from playing in the rain, and realized that their dreams were just over the horizon. They were two children, still innocent, still curious. He remembered how yesterday they had been riding their worn out bicycles around the block, racing for hours on end. His being bright red with rough black tires, hers being a pale pink with a plastic flower-covered basket and white tires. It was still sunny then and he could see the golden shimmers of her fine blonde hair, and the spectrum of blue in her doe eyes. His dark brown hair was matted from the wind and his green eyes sparkled from the joy of a childhood not wasted. They raced all the way to the park by the stream and immediately threw their bicycles to the ground. They ran all the way to the wrinkled, fat oak tree that had at least 50 carvings on its trunk. As he stood underneath with her, he was overcome by a feeling he never knew. It was at that moment that she swept her hair away from her face and leaned in, gently kissing his lips. They were eleven, and immediately thereafter he knew that he loved her. It was not a love filled with lustful passions that he often saw exchanged between the adults in those classic black & white movies, but a love built upon a platonic bond that was forged when they explored together in the same play pen as infants. There as they stood on the grassy hill, the wind gently blowing their hair, they made a promise that they would always remember these moments no matter what came to pass. Their road to adulthood would be along the spectrum of the rainbow into the horizon. They could only smile with excitement at what awaited them.

when we were taking her to the airport the clouds were charcoal gray and angrily spitting, and we were saying, how long is the flight? and the time difference is? and so you are moving towards the past or the future? and i said we are always moving towards the future. crossing over the bridge it began to pour and the windshield wipers couldn’t move fast enough. then the universe snapped its fingers, the rain stopped, and there was a rainbow spanning the whole sky, and we could see where it began and where it ended–or where it ended and where it began. a camera can’t capture the spectacle of a rainbow and the endlessness of it, the way it makes your heart whir and flutter in your chest, the question of where you’d be and what you’d find at the spot where it leaves the sky and touches the earth. a pot of gold, why not? grasp it and drink it all up before it disappears.
