"when i get there, i'm going to give you a cd. i want you to take it from me and never give it back. i don't ever want to see it again." but i've already got that one. "i don't care. burn it. it's too good. plus, theyre on the rolling stone top 10 best dressed list." you're such a snob.

but really, this does present a problem for our little alternative-culture world that me an you live in. i mean, admit it, the album is good. how much does it really take away from the music that the video is played right between britney and jennifer's latest ass parade? this one is not in the punk rock handbook. if you liked a band before they were cool, you can still like them, but you have to act like you feel cheated, sold out. but if you never heard of them until that hit single ravaged the charts, you don't feel cheated, just guilty for loving that catchy little tune so much and being part of the buying frenzy that puts the album in gold? platinum? status. then you feel the little stabs when you suddenly have something in common with the next joe asshole who knows nothing about music, or your scene, or anything at all but hey, have you heard of the strokes, they're the next big thing.

i can't help but like them a bit, even though my reason for liking them is likely to be some journalist's reason for knocking them: they remind me a little bit of the velvet_underground and more than a little bit of Richard Hell & the Voidoids the fragment of the ghost of andy warhol that i imagine lives in my head approves.

Every now and again they hype good music by accident. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

they're in rolling stone because they're good....the critics did a lot better than the "fans" did...i think there was three choices for them..britney spears, nsync, and sum 41...none of which are very impressive in my mind...

I agree, ya don't have to hate a bnad just because they're popular... and ya don't even have to feel suilty, if they're truly good... I wqas taken a bit off guard by Gorillaz, of all things, as there was a lot of variation on the album (the first 5 times i heard it, i asked "who is this, again?")... sometimes Big Media accidentally sneaks in good shite... hell, 120 minutes and alternative nation used to be my olnly way of finding anything even vaguely non-mainstream... and SOMEONE has to like things for them to get popular...

it frustrates me that there is this dilemma in the first place. you know how teenagers are SUPPOSED to enjoy j.lo and nsync and blink 182? And you know how that's generally looked down upon by people outside that circle of carefully selected "target" teenagers? This is like the reverse of that. We're no better than the shallow teeny boppers if we can't allow ourselves to like music simply because it's popular. I wish that we could be a society of inclusiveness, rather than exclusivity. I wish that people could listen to words rather than dj's scratching in the background, and that people could try and catch the message rather than being repelled by the medium. Music is good, in any form, no matter what the "quality". If it speaks to just one person on this earth, its done its job. If it happens to speak to the general public in a way that makes it popular, than so be it. That doesn't mean it has to suddenly become out of fashion for those of us who choose to remain out of fashion. Wear what you want to wear, be who you want to be, and for gods' sake, listen to the music that speaks to YOU, no matter who else it does or does not connect with.

i like 2 or 3 of their songs, but i downloaded them instead of buying Is This It. they remind me of boys in jean jacksets who i would've met at parties when i was 18--the boys who were too cool or shy to flirt back. they're not getting any of my fucking money.
