raze i forgot all about the sweet potato toes...i think i had some sort of convoluted explanation all cooked up and ready to go, but then i got distracted by a beaver crossing the road or something, left it boiling too long, and the kitchen just about exploded.

as for what i liked about "let the right one in"...everything, basically. it was one of those things where i found myself thinking, "this is a perfect film. i wouldn't change a thing about it." everything just felt exactly right. the cinematography, the music, the actors...especially the kids playing the two pivotal lead roles, oskar and eli. i didn't feel like they were actors for a second. i haven't gotten that emotionally involved in a movie, and felt so affected by the ending, in quite some time. the knowledge that there's a hollywood remake coming makes me want to belch flames. it seems hollywood is so completely creatively bankrupt at this point, they don't even try to come up with any "original" ideas anymore, settling for remakes of great foreign films that are systematically drained of all that made them great and then bludgeoned into unrecognizable, one-dimensional husks made for lobotomized audiences who want to see lots of stuff blowed up real good and boobies and gooey red stuff leaking from someone's head. i guess the argument people in favour of such remakes would make is something along the lines of, "subtitles make me have to read, reading hurts my brain, and the original movie was slow and boring, because the dialogue didn't explain everything to me every thirteen seconds. and there weren't wall-to-wall frenetic action sequenced to distract me from the giant plot holes and lack of character development...you know, the kind that look really stylish even though they're edited with so many cuts, you have no idea what the hell's going on most of the time." personally, i enjoy movies that take their time and treat me like i have a brain, not spelling everything out for me and forcing me to do a little heavy lifting of my own now and then. but that's just my personal taste.

i guess i'm a little bitter about the movies coming out of hollywood these days and the fact that the masses just eat it up. but what can you do? i'm just thankful there are interesting, off-the-beaten-path movies out there for the people who want to find them.

also, be on the lookout for mail in the next few weeks, mon ami.

rt i had a very similar reaction to this amazing swedish film. although it's been a while since i've seen it i do remember feeling empathy for the well drawn characters and was stunned by the metaphor of eli's anguish...how the blood oozed from her scalp when oskar didn't "ask her in."

a few intelligent, recent-ish films for you to consider:

waltz with bashir
wendy and lucy/ old joy
the class
this is england
brick
the ballad of jack and rose

looking forward to your mail...
