flux perhaps a lot has gone on in my life in the last several years. perhaps, things have changed, but not as quickly as i wished? perhaps these questions have gotten too complicated for me to be able to answer them to my own satisfaction. but i need the practice.

hard to say what's a typical day at this point, mostly because i'm back in school. i can only touch on some of the typical activities of a week.

i've just finished my first semester working towards a phd in computational linguistics - at this point, all i've done is try to get some linguistics background to match computational skills. four classes - syntax, first language acquisition, typology, and an intro course. finished the semester strong. i'm pretty in love with the program - the professors, my cohort, and so on. it suits me well.

i'm also working 16 hours a week for a software company that creates educational tools for teachers - trying to give them better access to the data they're already collecting about students. the company was just bought by news_corp (!?!), who're interested in our research into replacing textbooks w/ tools that are more dynamic, more responsive to an individual classroom or student's needs. my feelings on the takeover aren't really positive, but there's no way to get another part time gig that pays nearly as well, so i'm staying, at least for now.

the other major part of my life is aikido. i've found a dojo near my apartment here in brooklyn that i've been attending for the last 2.5 years. i just passed my 3rd kyu test. the dojo is fairly unique - it's a lot more formal than anything else i've seen in the us, and a lot more formal than i hear a lot of places in japan are, even. it's an interesting match for me, a lot different than my standard personality, but at the same time, especially 2.5 years ago, it gave me something i badly needed. without my training there, i don't think i'd have my life in as good an order as i do at the moment, and i really don't think i would have gotten into grad school.

what else? new york's still engaging when i get the time, though i've had trouble meeting many people, or connecting with those that i do.

favorite moments of the year? getting into cuny. passing that 3rd kyu test. getting an a+ on the first paper i'd written in 7 years. subgenius devival. berkeley co_op reunion.

gotta run out to morning aikido class now. perhaps i'll write more later? or in another couple years?
