most of these dudes are dead. but why let that stop me? john cassavates james dean tim & jeff_buckley joseph_gordon_levitt and that guy i saw on facebook once who was a friend of a friend. i can't remember his name, but he had just about the prettiest face i've ever seen.

Franz Kafka was quite a beautiful man. Particularly in one photo taken when he was 30. Kunal Nayyar (Raj) is also beautiful. Martin Freeman (Bilbo Baggins, Watson, Arthur Dent) - isn't beautiful, exactly, but endearing.

(Inner critic tells me I shouldn't have put a dash there. Dunno whether inner critic is masculine or feminine, but I don't have a crush on him/her.)

i'm not sure if he quite counts as a celebrity, but dan bejar. something about those deadpan, curmudgeonly, devil-may-care yet nervous personas... and that hair.

is there a variation on the dude crush where you wish someone was your volatile uncle? 'cause that would be david milch for me. he's gone from being a professor of literature at yale to battling heroin and gambling addictions, while writing some of the most poetic, brain-melting prose you'll ever hear on television. he once continued an argument with david caruso on the set of "nypd blue" while he knew he was having a heart attack (he didn't want to let caruso have the last word). i'm in love with the man's brain, and all the dark and light places that reside within, even as the slow encroachment of alzheimer's shrinks the chess board, leaving him a grandmaster with fewer and fewer moves to make.

Daniel Tammet was a literary crush for me. I read an article about him years ago and fell in love halfway through, so much so that I was almost disappointed to find out near the end that he was gay. As if this person I'd just read about would meet me somewhere, somehow. I loved how he was all, "Okay, mentally pin me down as the smart-at-math autistic guy. I'll be off doing other fun things in the meantime. Enjoy your stereotypes!" Recommended: Every Word Is a Bird We Teach to Sing. Personal essays and explorations about linguistics and languages.
