This
'charming'
little
child's

actually
got
its
origins
from
the
Black
(Bubonic)
Plague
that
swept
through
Europe
in

To

Ring
around
the
rosies - describes
the
rash
associated
with
the
plague
.
Pockets
full
of
posies -
Due
to
the
stench
of
the
disease
and
the
dead
,
many
people
took
to
keeping
perfumed handkerchiefs
or
flowers
in
their
pockets
to
use
to
hold
to
their
noses
in
an
attempt
to
avoid
the
hideous
odors.
Ashes
!
Ashes
! -
The
homes
and
possessions
of
plague
victims
were
burned
in
an
attempt
to
control
the
spread
of
disease
.
We
all
fall
DOWN
! -
Many
DID
fall
,
never
to
get
up
again
