'Ring around the rosies... pockets full of posies... Ashes! Ashes! We all fall down!

This 'charming' little child's chant actually got its origins from the Black (Bubonic) Plague that swept through Europe in the 14th century.

To break it down...

Ring around the rosies - describes the rash associated with the plague. Pockets full of posies - Due to the stench of the disease and the dead, many people took to keeping perfumed handkerchiefs or flowers in their pockets to use to hold to their noses in an attempt to avoid the hideous odors. Ashes! Ashes! - The homes and possessions of plague victims were burned in an attempt to control the spread of disease. We all fall DOWN! - Many DID fall, never to get up again.'

for God's sake! i use to sing this as a child. :(
