student also directly on the fruit, though surface area is more limited.

the water releases heat during the exothermic process as freezing

(what you call "freezing" I perceive to be water molecules settling into a lower kinetic energy state, a mellowing out and submission to the cohesive potential energy which draws the molecules together, electrons in those nonbonding molecular orbitals reaching out to regions of relatively low electron density.)

some like to say it's all about DESIRE. I say there's a limit to metaphors and anthropomorphizing of particles. "chlorine WANTS to pick up another electron...." blah blah. save it for the third graders.

amy eros is "desire" thanatos is "mellowing out"

if god is just another story that we tell, then so is science. my hypothesis is that thanatos has been winning since the Enlightenment.

(but nevermind this if you're not into mythology.)

a correlation
it's true.

all the scientists and engineers i know have a liking for stories:

mythology, sci fi, fantasy and the matrix movies, one and the same.

science and god both demand a certain amount of faith from their disciples;

faith involves a certain narrowing of critical thought, a limiting of your considerations for society. the world becomes simpler, after all, through the eyes of god and/or science. the real challenge would be to resist this kind of crutch.

not that there isn't a time and a place for gods and stories. i wouldn't want to live in a world without them. but neither is going to solve the problem of world hunger.

the danger is when scientist claim to be working on behalf of humanity, in defense of the poor, oppressed, and suffering.

amy also, most of the (academic) scientists i know are liberal minded, pure seekers of truth and have faith that those truths would ulimately heal the world's problems. most cannot and do not claim to know how this would work out, but they feel important.

"too-late" capitalism favors solutions from scientists and engineers that can be turned into investment opportunities. and, as long as the big religions offer only transcendent solutions, people go along with this game. world population was on the up and up starting with the Industrial Revolution, which occurred after centuries of removals of women's rights by the state-sponsored religions.

i would fervently agree with any point that science and technology have been the tools of the oppressor through the entire length of modern history. it is the "let's leave" philosophy that i question, though, not science and technology itself.

warmthofrelease hmm. didn't know this was here.

no relation. nothing to add to the discussion. except that both belief and science are not made easier by changing your lens. to say you have to be more critical as a scientist or less critical as a person of faith is to undermine yourself in either venture, and to invite yourself into indoctrination or delusion or both.

basically, stick to your guns. which doesn't mean you shouldn't ever change your mind. it just means you can't change yourself just because you change the topic. if you've a mind for science, or if you've a heart for spirituality, or both or neither, stay true to yourself.

but heat is just...energy. which can be wasted entirely. warmth implies a receptor. it's sensory. living. I'm glad I am what I am.
