josh is moving. he is serious this time. i think he'll do it. and i would go. but he is only sixty percent of my life. the other forty percent is here. my family. i still have other friends (though maybe not for long. seems i have been shirking my responsibilites lately, and maybe when he is gone i will have no one.) it would almost be cheaper for me to keep an apartment here in kansas city, live and work here, yknow, and fly up there one or two weekends a month. rent in nyc is at least two to three times what it is here, and that's for a shithole. maybe someday i could move. i've never been there though. i would just fade away.

I finally decided to spend a little time there after staying away for a long time. Sure, it may be hackneyed, but the absence of the WTC from the skyline is a VERY tangible thing. When we were still newlyweds, the ex and I saved some money and tried to take in as much of the romance that lurks around the place, a carriage ride through Central Park, ice-skating at Rockefeller. We looked out over the city from the observation level of the WTC and marvelled at the view from that height, and the next day, from Liberty's torch, we marveled again at the busy expanse of city in one direction and the vast, calm, blue plain of the Atlantic. Zipperhead's was a comforting stop when I came home. I walked by a couple of my students on the way out, but neither of them recognized me with my hat on. Life is funny like that sometimes.
