ears
o n m i've been in bed, i forget how many days, almost a week, bad fevers, earaches turned to plugged ears, haven't had an inner ear infection since i was a kid, and never i don't think before in both ears. the other day i could hear myself echoing when i was speaking and that was pretty cool actually for a moment. 100225

o n m what wasn't cool was when it really hurt,
heartbeat pounding on my eardrums.

unhinged (i grew up with chronic ear infections, even through college. it never seemed to fail; in the spring i always got such a bad head cold that it turned into an infection that clogged up my whole head. something about poorly shaped sinus cavities, bad drainage...blah blah. one of my last remembered ear infections was right before my junior recital. my inner ear was so filled with snot everything i said sounded like i was shouting and everything i heard sounded like it was a mile away. the doctor said the only way to restore my hearing, drain the shit in my inner ear, was to poke a hole in my eardrum. somehow that didn't sound like a good idea. and i also distinctly remember also thinking 'now i know what beethoven felt like' ;-) ) 100226

n o m you were very right unhinged, i forgot to say thanks for helping! i ended up at the hospital that week and got the saline solution and bottle but have been terrible about using it, did for a while, and it mostly cleared up, i was on antibiotics twice and my hearing mostly came back though really was hard to sing for the first few months especially the high notes, and intermittently still bothers so should stick with the treatment i just don't like putting stuff up my nose 100807

raze it's very strange waking up with one ear no longer seeming to function in any useful way, everything muffled and distant and dead, and having it stay that way all day. no pain or itching or discomfort of any kind. nothing but unexplained near-deafness on one side throwing off your equilibrium and making everything sound wrong and very left-leaning.

you get to thinking maybe things are going to stay that way. then you wake up the next day and it's business as usual, as if nothing ever happened.

it was either the briefest ear infection in the history of humankind, or a cruel prank spearheaded by one of the invisible ear gnomes.

epitome of incomprehensibility It doesn't need an infection, just stuffiness. My ears were badly blocked from a cold two years ago - I'd just started working at the place I am now, and I couldn't hear properly to answer the phone, so I went to the clinic and paid $20 to have someone spray water in my ears with a liquid syringe. Yeah. $10 per ear. They're making those ancillary fees illegal now. It didn't even work at the time, because the blocked part was inside my ear (Eustachian tubes? the things between your ear and nose? those ones). It still took a few days to unblock. 170920
