beethoven
epitome of incomprehensibility After what I wrote on staff_paper, I discovered he didn't have a page here.

So. Talking about Beethoven's famous works, I still can't decide whether I like the 5th symphony the best or not. The last time I listened to the 5th I thought it finished in a cheesy way - playing the same chord about a million times. But it's amazing the way he took two radically different themes and then in the third movement stripped them down to show how they were both related (the first including the Cosmic Doorbell motif).

Associations with the 5th: early piano lessons, dancing in my parents' living room, space, doorbells.

unhinged i like the second movement of the 7th symphony better than all the movements of the 5th put together.

string quartet op. 132 is also amazing

amys in red i don't play the piano anymore, but i'm glad i played it before, so i can listen to somebody much better than me play the sonata i have pretty well memorized. also glad i don't play it anymore. for. i would only obsess on whether i had it right enough. if i wasn't so stupid to have it wrong, especially the left hand. I'll tell you what. it's a relief to listen to an uncritiqueable version, it's very, very relaxing. (mwa ha ha) 160830

unhinged i was learning the second movement of the violin concerto for him and then he dumped me. its been two years. maybe i should give it another try. that movement is beautiful and i miss playing it 160901

unhinged (i look back on it now and it seems ridiculous but the end of that relationship was a death for me that triggered a nasty depression and i couldnt stand to remember all the times i'd practiced that movement and poured every bit of devotion i had to our happy little home into it cause it turns out it was all sham anyways. he was too traditional (or misogynistic depending on the topic) and i was too busy pretending to be some ideal version of myself.

so for a long time beethoven was a loaded weapon, a barely sharp box cutter. maybe i have finally regained enough sanity to try it again)
