all_the_lost_songs
raze first there were deep drum hits and ominous words held an octave apart on moving day while storm clouds put on weight. then there was an earworm in a bibione restaurant that was a dead ringer for some great lost police b-side, only it was sung in a romance language that evolved from vulgar latin. a clothing store in that tourist town played the same mix cd every time i visited. for thirty thousand lira you could book an hour in a room upstairs with two desktop computers and internet access. i spent all my time on blather, waiting for the last cut on the album to come around again. a heavy dance beat threatened to crush everything it touched while a soul singer gone to seed lost his mind, trying and failing to drown out a dispassionate clutch of female backup singers who moaned, "every night, every day," not caring about the presence or absence of light. back home, there was an anonymous power pop anthem in a kids help phone commercial with a two-word refrain. in a house that wasn't mine, a wordless yodel draped itself over a more sedate synthesized rhythm that kept time while someone i thought i loved for a little less than a month brought me into the horrors of a childhood no one should ever have to endure. these sounds were never mine to lose. i lost them anyway. 240521
