deadlines
raze commissioned someone to make me some artwork. does good work, well-liked, solid reputation. paid upfront. felt like the classy thing to do. take my money and do what you do. it all seemed pretty promising in the beginning.

the artist has now missed ten deadlines since the beginning of february. that's not an exaggeration. i went back through all our messages and counted. there's been a lot of, "i'll definitely have it done for you on such and such a day," followed by nothing. i've been patient, and i've been firm, and it hasn't made any difference. i've yet to see even a rough sketch.

while i've been a little slower than i meant to be sometimes with work i've done for other people, i've always sent rough work along while it was in-progress and kept them updated on how things were going. if i did this sort of thing, word would get around and i wouldn't get any work at all. so maybe it's a fluke. maybe i'm the lucky fluke recipient. or maybe too many people make excuses for the excuse-makers and accept whatever they get.

a few deadlines ago i was going to ask for my money back. now i think i might let it go. it's becoming funny in an are-you-kidding-me kind of way. i want to see how many more excuses and empty promises and missed cutoff points there can be before the hot air runs out.

i think maybe we crack twenty before this is done with. and you know what count von count would say. "twenty! twenty missed deadlines! ah ah ah ah ah!"

epitome of incomprehensibility I've struggled with deadlines all my life - anxiety, a differently-organized (ha!) mind, plain old laziness - but there's that, and then there's ignoring them completely.

Assuming nothing makes him anxious about this project, that it's not something completely new and strange to him, I might ask him straight-up whether he's interested, and tell him if he isn't, you'll ask someone else (I mean, if you plan to do that). Besides, you're being generous already in paying someone to draw for something you plan to distribute for free.

raze he came through in the end, and there was sort of an explanation for why it took so long, though it would have been nice to get that explanation a little earlier than after the fact. happy ending? sort of? 150420

e_o_i That's good that you finally got the art. And maybe I was too harsh. Infinity knows I don't deserve to be. But yay, (part of) a thing completed! 150422
