Not because they suck, per se. But because of the response they might illicit. Combined with the fact that you have this response while surrounded by strangers. A perfect example would be Sweet_Caroline. Now, play that song at Fenway, or in the Boston Subway (there's a video its on the internet) then that's an appropriate context. But play that song over the PA at a steakhouse? Now that's not fair. Now everyone feels compelled to sing, whether or not they want to. These songs can still suck. But only by coincidence.

It also almost goes without saying, songs that are extremely sad shouldn't have to be experienced when just going about your business. I do think Matchbox XX kind of sucks, but it floors me that I've had to walk through the aisles of a grocery store while Back 2 Good plays above my head. Or how the hell do I live in a timeline where Mr Brightside has become a fucking party anthem, a fucking stadium song where a hundred thousand college idiots are singing it in the midst of their fucking football team??? Does this not strike anyone else as absurd? That song is heart wrenchingly, melodramatically miserable! Am I the only one seeing this shit?! Perhaps this is categorically more of a sports phenomenon than I think. Or perhaps just herd behavior in general. Who knows...no I'm seriously asking, who knows?

the moment of "this song doesn't fit the scene" that immediately comes to mind for me is the one captured on rude_boy some years back. though i think that was less of an intentional choice on the part of anyone working in the store, and more an accident of timing and top forty radio. (what e_o_i wrote there still makes me laugh, too.)

Seriously. It ought to be a human right that I get to decide whether or not Karma_Chameleon is stuck in my head for the rest of the day. I mean fuck.
