today's has a few death announcements and a few anniversaries. when there's a collection of unrelated people talking about similar things on a specific day, it makes me wonder if there's something about the day.

she is checking facebook on her smartphone on the bus, all the while elbowing the person sitting next to her, with little to no concern about that person. not a single polite word as she repeatedly bumps the real life breathing person sitting next to her. social media = the disintegration of polite society

so much cause for overanalysis and anxiety. why do you you not message me back nearly as often these days even when you've been online and you post other things, yet you "like" everything i post? does that even mean anything? does it offer a lazy chance at keeping yourself in my mind without having to really communicate? i wonder what things would be like if we weren't social-media friends.

the best time i've had by far — and i've been almost everywhere at some point, except for the toilet that used to call itself twitter — has been on mastodon. i have, however, noticed an old theme come back to haunt me. i post a silly picture of a crochet bat and everyone goes nuts with the boosting and the shiny stars. i share a song i wrote and recorded myself, or a picture that's actually meaningful and well-composed, and even most of the people who follow me couldn't care less. it's not a failing of the platform or the server i'm on, which has some really lovely folks to recommend it. i guess this is just the way these places tend to work. and that's always stung a little. maybe it's one of the reasons this little world of words has always meant so much to me. there might not be many of us here, but we aren't afraid to make it clear that we care about one another. you are not disposable. nor is anything you have to say. believe it.

I remember the gold stars we got in school for being good. Row upon row of shining foil (not a single one missed) that tallied my worth. And now, the same. How many stars can we get if we trade in our hearts? I watch my pile grow. I watch yours too. Such a small galaxy that says nothing about who you are or the value of what you’ve made. I want to pluck Andromeda from the sky and empty its pockets of pulsars into your open hands. And that would just be for starters.
