Norm Perfect question, thank you.

First, you're not wrong to feel connected with that rock. It's not unlike you. It is matter. It is energy. Looking back far enough I'm sure we would find that it was born of the same thing life was. Although, it was not born. It will not die. It does not gather energy or consume it. It will not grow or decay. Smashed to dust it's atoms still bounce but when I'm dust I hope to be long dead. Therefore, life is something different.

Imagine this. If everything is energy and everywhere there is something, no spaces in between, than would everything exist as one single energy?

Norm Ugh, no, nevermind, I have nothing to say. I should have just followed my instincts and answered with a question.

Do you really believe that rocks are alive?

A short winded expounding suits me better.

redtree i liked what you said and i do agree with you. i prefer to define life in the sense of something human or animal, where it is born, lives a certain amount of time, and then dies. even plants begin with a seed, grow, manifest, bear seed, and depending if they are annual, biennial or perennial, die or return.

as for rocks...the life they possess is definately different. but i do think they are alive.

it's like an artist showing his work in a gallery. people visit and observe all of his work, but someone asks him if he has anything else he didn't show. the artist tells him yes, back at the studio.

art is art. life is life.

rocks are timeless. they've been around forever. they have many purposes. no, you can't talk to one. it can't talk to you. you can't make it bigger or cause it to grow. you can't kill it. it doesn't contain blood. it doesn't breathe. but it has moving atoms. substance. weight.
we think about rocks. we use them. we need them. we share space with them. we sit on them. they warm us when you heat them up. we build walls out of them. they let moss grow on them for our appreciation of beauty. our lives are affected by them.

what about crystals?

there's definately not a cut and dry answer to your question.

are they really alive? umm, no.
do they have some kind of life? yes
how do you define that life? anyone's idea.

1. the ability to fly
2. the ability to be invisible
