misremembered
epitome of incomprehensibility An article about a book by Colson Whitehead (Cool Machine) gives a quote about a "second-rate pizza joint with a signed picture of Jerry Orbach on the wall."

"Hmm," I thought. "I should look up who that is. Someone in sports, maybe?"

And then I have to go somewhere, and I come back home, and I remember I meant to Google someone. Confidently, I enter the name "John Osborne."

e_o_i Okay, Jerry Orbach was actually a Broadway actor and singer who lived from 1935-2004. (Makes sense in a book set in early 80s New York.)

And John Osborne was also a famous person - a British playwright (lived 1929-1994). He wrote Look Back in Anger and The Entertainer. I'm sure I read of him before and then forgot. But the name lurked in the murky recesses of my mind, waiting to be confused with someone else's.

raze sometimes i wonder just how much of my own life i'm getting wrong in the retelling. for years i thought i had a solid memory. better than most. and maybe that's so. but i've erased entire people from past events without meaning to.

do i really have the details and the dialogue right? or have i warped what happened into something other than itself? i guess we can all only tell the truth as we see and remember it. flawed and incomplete as it may be.

(incidentally, i think jerry orbach's very best work was voicing lumiere in disney's "beauty and the beast". no one ever made a finer french candelabra if you ask me.)

e_o_i Similar thoughts here. My cousin remembers my brother and I sneaking candies from the kitchen at Grandpa's funeral. She was 5 then. I was 13. At first I protested that I didn't remember doing such a thing - I remember bits of memorial speeches and a Mature, Serious conversation with a cousin of my mom's - but I had to agree that it was in character.

(Lia was not caught, she says. Only my brother and I were caught. She was small and could sneak by unnoticed.)

e_o_i Also, yes, Lumière was one of the more memorable talking dishware! (things_I_never_thought_I'd_say)

There are so many people I feel like I *should* have heard of. Apparently it takes nearly 40 years to get to a place of "I don't need to be ashamed of not knowing stuff, just be open to learning more."
