http://longnow.org We are a mere 10,000 years out of the last Ice Age, the twinkling of an eye in Cosmic Time. Already Civilizations have formed, matured and fallen to dust. That which was carveed in stone has been reduced to gibberish, because the minds that understood the symbols have blown away like dust on the wind. Electronic Memory is far more Fragile, We are becoming a more Ephemeral Species with each passing moment. This Organization is trying to address these issues, check them out if you wish.

I Now Generally use the five digit phrasing for Years. Just to make people wonder a little. Counting is afterall a human preoccupation, and the method of numeration is arbitrary. And so dates can be listed in many forms, as in this example. 11-17-1952 is the same as saying November 17th 1952 or in the Long Now's version, 11-17-01952. This is the version I now use when asked on Forms my DOB. In blather I Now know it is the same as 521117. But in about 50 years the same day will occur again, only I'm sure it will be different this time.

I wish we were more ephemeral than we already are what we're doing to the earth disgusts me they way we believe we matter one wit to the ultimate fate of earth amazes me in the deep future, I hope there is no sign of our previous existence whatsoever

We may be a step in the punctuated Equalibrium that is evolution. In the beginning it is believed that life was anaerobic and that as they expelled waste they transformed the atmosphere by polluting it with toxic oxogen. Making it a world that was no longer fit for their ilk, except in select niches. But it was now a better world for animal life and so it arose. We are a part of nature, Even if we destroy the current order of things or not. Life IS change. Life is TENACIOUS. It will not end by our puny efforts, nor will we save it. The truth is far more vast.

I saw a sticker on a pole on my way to work the other day. It was just a date and the words Time Travel Day. I can only hope.
