The_fancy_friperie, so I'd be less nervous about going someplace new and so the people would buy the clothes I was trying to sell.

(I wasn't overwhelmed by my nervousness and they bought a few clothes, but I can't rate my success scientifically since I didn't have a non-dressed-up clone as a control group.)

the last thing i dressed up for was a funeral for a man i hadn't seen in almost half as long as i'd been alive. but when i was younger, i used to dress up for no real reason at all. just to give myself something to feel good about, i guess. one day i showed up for grade nine math class looking like an underage lawyer with an important court date. mr. zawadski said, "you're looking quite dapper today, john. would you like to stand up and tell the class what the special occasion is?" so i did. "this morning," i said, "i got up and noticed this blazer in my closet. it looked at me and said, 'i might not fit you very much longer, so you'd best be wearing me while you're still able.' and here we are." i can't remember if anyone laughed. but after i sat down, bonita smiled and said, "that was cute." she seemed to mean it, too.

A reception to promote the library + gallery's summer season. I picked up a copy of their schedule. When I got home, I realized I already had one. Anyway, I changed my T-shirt and jeans for a flowy magenta dress and a pendant necklace. The dress was shorter than it looked on the hanger. I frowned at my right knee: three bruises. But when I consulted the long mirror downstairs, the_big_picture didn't highlight such blemishes. I just looked like a person in a summer dress. As I walked to the library, I thought, "At least I'm rebelling against the dress code of Cedar_Christian_Academy." As if that still applies (no). As if a tiny part of my mind is still thirteen (maybe). Two people complimented the colour. Of the dress, not of my mind.
