advance_road_trip_invitation
epitome of incomprehensibility I forgot to mention this before: the last time I went to Arden, I got a road_trip invitation from my aunt. To drive around Maine, mainly. In two years' time!

See, the three-generation trio (Sarah, Julia, and Julia's daughter) did a "girls trip" last year around the east coast, and now they're willing to expand their company to include someone of feminine gender but outside their direct line of descent: me, Sarah's niece and Julia's cousin. But! Not yet.

The plan is to visit our Maine relatives, but Julia doesn't want to cross the border with Trump still in office. Part of me thinks this is over-cautious, but she is both

a) worried about being questioned if border people, etc., hear her and her daughter speaking Spanish (Julia married a teacher from Colombia, so their kids are bilingual)

aaaand

b) angry that she needs to be worried about that.

Fair enough. So I've got a standing invitation for a road trip two years from now.

That's an impetus to get my driver's license before then so I can contribute to the driving part. This is defiance of my anxious side, which is not just scared at the prospect of driving but also starts listing impediments to the trip even happening - one serious, one a little funny, one oddly specific -

1) My aunt just turned 80, and while she's in good health now, what's if something happens and she's too sick to go, and then Julia doesn't feel close enough to me to take me along without her?

2) What's if I'm pregnant? No, no, hear me out. Say I get into a relationship with someone who really wants a kid, and then I decide I want to have one of my own while I still can, and then I can't go on this road trip because I'm going to have a baby soon.

3) What's if L. is too busy doing college applications or other resume-building activities? No, she won't be graduating then - Ontario, unlike Quebec, has grade 12. But still, she could be away for some reason. Say her school is organizing a summer trip to Italy for upper-year students and she decides that's too rare an opportunity to pass up. It happened to me! It could happen to her!!

(Note: this is how I missed my cousin Julia's wedding, incidentally. I was in Italy instead.)
